Questions and answers
(frequently asked questions)

Question: "We are using a lock management system from another manufacturer and would like to cross over. Can the details be transferred to portier®?"

Answer: "Yes, to a great extent. The file data can usually be transferred without any problems. We need detailed information with respect to the lock functions and model details."

Question: "We have been using the old version of portier® for 3 years. Will data be lost if we do an update and, if so, which?"

Answer: "All data will be retained. You will have to check the user rights in the new version and also allocate new authorisations to keys and cylinders. Previous versions of portier did not have this facility."

Question:"We want to install portier in a total of 5 places in the company. Will the network load increase?
What about licence rights?"

Answer:"Inside the location your licence is sufficient for any number of installations. For another location you will need another licence. As far a the network load is concerned: thanks to the client-server architecture you do not need to fear any network load worth mentioning."

Question:"I saw in the preliminary announcement that access is also possible with portier® via intranet and Internet.
How does that work and what do we need?"

Answer:"portier® addresses the server from the workstation via the network and makes use of the usual TCP/IP protocol. If you know the IP address of the server and if it allows free access then any computer which has access to the Internet also has access to your data. The same access protection applies as within the internal company network. The speed depends on the connection used; in tests between two widely separated workstations in Germany, however, it was shown that a normal ISDN connection is more than satisfactory."

Question:"We just bought software from another supplier last year. If we cross over now must we take double costs into account? Is there any way to limit the costs?"

Answer:"Under certain circumstances we offer the possibility of a cross-upgrade. Thus, all users of DataKey software can cross over for a very small amount to portier because, as one of the first manufacturers of locking systems, the firm of C.Ed.Schulte - CES Velbert- has decided on further co-operation with portier® and portier® plan."
